Boating with Kids – How to Plan a Safe and Fun Trip

Boating with Kids – How to Plan a Safe and Fun Trip

Planning a boat trip with children? Here’s how to keep it safe, fun, and easy – even for first-timers.

From sunscreen and snacks to shade and safety, this guide walks you through everything you need to think about before setting sail with kids.

1. Choose Calm Waters

Pick routes with minimal waves and short distances. Lakes, canals, and sheltered bays are perfect for family outings.

2. Life Jackets First

Make sure every child wears a properly fitted life jacket at all times on board. Bring your own if possible – not all rentals stock small sizes.

3. Sun and Shade

Children are sensitive to sun and heat. Bring hats, sunscreen, sunglasses, and try to choose boats with shade or canopies.

4. Keep It Short

Limit trips to 2–3 hours unless your kids are used to being on water. Factor in snacks, breaks, and possible boredom.

5. Snacks and Water

Pack mess-free snacks and plenty of water. Avoid glass bottles and greasy food. Keep hydration regular and easy.

6. Entertainment Onboard

Bring coloring books, audiobooks, binoculars, or marine-themed games. Let them help spot landmarks or wildlife.

7. Bathroom Planning

Check if the boat has a toilet. If not, plan stops in advance and explain the setup to your child calmly.

8. Set Safety Rules Early

Make it clear where they can move and sit. No running, no leaning over the edge, and always listen to the adult in charge.

9. Motion Sickness Prep

Bring motion sickness bands or child-safe medication if needed. Fresh air, facing forward, and calm sailing all help.

10. HejBoat Tip

Many boats on HejBoat are family-ready – just use the filter! And don’t hesitate to ask the owner about safety gear and tips for boating with kids.
