Fuel Costs and Hidden Fees When Renting a Boat
What will your boat rental really cost? This guide uncovers the most common fees – from fuel to final cleaning – so you can avoid surprises.
The price you see online is often just the base rate. In this guide, we break down what’s usually included, what’s not, and how to budget realistically for your next boat trip.
1. Fuel – Often Not Included
Most rentals do not include fuel in the base price. You’ll either pay per liter used or refill the tank at the end. Ask the operator if the boat must be returned with a full tank or if they charge based on engine hours.
2. Cleaning Fees
Some companies charge a mandatory cleaning fee – especially for larger boats or overnight stays. This can range from €20 to €150 depending on size and duration.
3. Security Deposit – What to Expect
You may be asked to leave a deposit (cash or card hold) before your trip. This covers potential damage or missing items. Expect €200–€2,000 depending on the boat.
4. Skipper and Crew Fees
If you rent with a skipper, this is often an extra cost (unless stated otherwise). Skippers usually cost €100–€250/day. A crewed yacht may also include steward or cook fees.
5. Insurance – What’s Covered?
Many boats include basic insurance, but it may have a high deductible. Check if there’s an option to buy extra coverage or reduce liability. Always clarify what's covered and what’s not.
6. Port Fees and Mooring Charges
Staying overnight or docking at popular marinas can cost extra. Mooring fees vary widely – from €10 to over €100/night depending on location and season.
7. VAT and Taxes
Prices sometimes exclude local VAT (Value Added Tax). In most EU countries, VAT is around 20% – and should be stated clearly in your booking. If not, ask!
8. Equipment Rental – Optional Add-ons
Want snorkel gear, paddleboards, or a barbecue? These are often charged as extras. Ask what’s included and what costs more.
9. Late Return Fees
Returning the boat late can incur fees, especially during high season. Some operators charge hourly rates or full-day extensions. Always communicate delays in advance.
