Safety Rules and Regulations When Boating in Europe
From life jackets to alcohol limits, boating in Europe comes with clear safety rules. This guide explains the essentials – simply and country by country.
Whether you’re a tourist or experienced skipper, following safety rules ensures a smooth, legal, and enjoyable day on the water. Here’s what you need to know before setting off.
1. Life Jackets – Who Must Wear Them?
Life jackets are mandatory in most European countries – especially for children. Some require jackets for all passengers at all times, others only in rough weather or small boats.
2. Alcohol Limits – Stay Below the Line
Most countries apply similar rules as for driving. The legal blood alcohol limit ranges from 0.0% (e.g. Hungary) to 0.5%. When in doubt, skip the alcohol altogether – penalties can be serious.
3. Speed Limits – Know Before You Go
Speed limits vary by waterway. Expect lower speeds on canals and in harbors, often 5–12 km/h. Breaking limits can lead to fines or even license suspension.
4. Right of Way – Who Goes First?
Generally, sailboats under sail have right of way over motorboats. Larger vessels and commercial traffic often take priority. Always check local navigation charts or ask locals if unsure.
5. Required Equipment Onboard
You must carry basic safety gear: life jackets, throwable flotation device, whistle or horn, fire extinguisher, and navigation lights. Some areas also require flares, anchor, or VHF radio.
6. Anchoring Rules – Don’t Block the Channel
Anchor only in designated areas. Avoid mooring too close to shipping lanes, ports, or underwater cables. Fines may apply if you block access or damage protected seabeds.
7. Night Boating – Extra Precautions
Boating at night is allowed in most areas, but your boat must have functioning navigation lights. Visibility is key, and speeds should be reduced. Not recommended for beginners.
8. Inland vs. Coastal Rules
Inland waterways often follow the CEVNI code, while coastal zones may have regional laws. Know the difference, especially if crossing from river to sea.
9. Country Highlights – Key Differences
- Germany: Life jackets required for kids under 13
- France: VHF radio required in coastal zones
- Croatia: Logbook check required before departure
- Denmark: License required for >15HP boats
