HejBoat Insurance Guide
Everything You Need to Know About Boat Rental Insurance. For Owners and Renters.
Accidents, damage, or unexpected situations can happen even with experienced skippers and well-maintained boats. That’s why insurance is essential for both owners and renters. It offers protection from unforeseen costs and legal liability, ensuring a safe and stress-free experience on the water.

For Boat Owners
If you’re listing your boat on HejBoat, you are fully responsible for ensuring it’s insured for rental use. Most standard private boat insurance policies do not automatically cover peer-to-peer rentals.
We recommend your policy includes:
-
Hull insurance – Covers damage to the boat itself
-
Third-party liability – Covers injury or damage caused to others
-
Charter use coverage – Must allow commercial or peer-to-peer rental
-
Personal accident insurance – Optional, but useful for skippers and guests
Before you accept bookings, ask your insurance provider:
-
Does my policy allow me to rent out my boat to others?
-
Are third-party users (renters) covered while operating the boat?
-
Are there specific skipper certifications or usage limitations required?
Note: Even if your boat is insured, you may not be covered for negligence or misuse by renters. You can always request a security deposit via HejBoat to minimize risk.

For Renters
As a renter, you’re responsible for using the boat safely and following all terms agreed with the owner.
We recommend you:
-
Always ask the owner what’s covered by their insurance
-
Handle the boat responsibly and follow all safety rules
-
Consider optional travel or boat rental insurance (e.g. trip cancellation, personal belongings, accident cover)
A little care goes a long way: Most insurance won’t cover reckless behavior, rule violations, or unreported incidents.
