Essential Safety Rules for Boat Renters

Essential Safety Rules for Boat Renters

Before you set sail, know the rules that keep you safe. These simple tips help prevent accidents and protect everyone onboard.

From life jackets to weather checks, this guide covers the basics of safe boating – especially for renters and beginners.

1. Life Jackets Are Mandatory

Every person on board must have a properly fitting life jacket. Most countries require this by law, especially for children.

2. Know Your Boat

Before departure, review where safety equipment is stored: fire extinguisher, anchor, first aid kit, and radio.

3. Respect Capacity Limits

Overloading the boat is dangerous and illegal. Stick to the stated maximum number of people.

4. Stay Sober

Alcohol impairs judgment, slows reaction time, and increases risk – especially on the water. Stay sharp and save the drinks for after.

5. Watch the Weather

Check weather forecasts before and during your trip. Sudden storms or strong winds can make boating unsafe very quickly.

6. Keep a Charged Phone

Have at least one fully charged phone in a waterproof case. In emergencies, you’ll need quick access to help.

7. Inform Someone on Land

Let a friend, family member, or marina know your plan and estimated return time. It adds a layer of safety in case something goes wrong.

8. Drive Carefully Near Swimmers

Always keep a safe distance from swimmers, paddleboarders, or moored boats. Speed limits apply in harbors and near beaches.

9. Use Navigation Apps or Charts

Don’t rely on memory or guesswork. Use maps or apps to track your route and avoid restricted or shallow areas.

10. HejBoat’s Safety Promise
