How to Handle an Emergency on the Water

How to Handle an Emergency on the Water

Nobody wants to think about emergencies – but knowing what to do can make all the difference.

From engine trouble to someone overboard, this guide explains how to stay calm and take the right steps in a boating emergency.

1. Stay Calm

In any emergency, your first job is to stay focused. Take a deep breath and assess the situation.

2. Stop the Boat Safely

If someone falls overboard or the engine fails, shift to neutral and anchor if necessary. Avoid panic steering.

3. Call for Help

Use your phone or VHF radio to call the marina, coast guard, or emergency services. Know the local numbers before you depart.

4. Use Safety Equipment

Life jackets, throw rings, and first aid kits should be easily accessible. Use them early – not as a last resort.

5. Retrieve Overboard Passengers

Approach slowly from downwind, cut the engine, and assist the person onboard using a ladder or rope.

6. Engine Failure

Drop anchor to avoid drifting and call your rental provider. They may be able to assist or arrange a tow.

7. Fire or Fuel Leak

Turn off the engine and evacuate the area if needed. Use the fire extinguisher and contact authorities immediately.

8. Medical Issue

If someone is injured or ill, administer basic first aid and contact help. Head to the nearest dock if possible.

9. Stay Visible

Use lights, signals, or bright clothing to stay seen – especially in fog, darkness, or busy traffic areas.

10. HejBoat Tip

Emergencies are rare, but readiness matters. Before departure, take 5 minutes to review your boat’s safety setup and contact numbers.
